Since the first wheel built by Mr Ferris for the Chicago World Fare, riding on the wheel has been a simple yet compelling idea. In so many ways the London Eye redefines this old idea. The pods on the outside of the wheel - to give maximum viewing is one. But the structure of the wheel and being propelled by the rim and not the hub is another very smart idea.
Like the Eiffel Tower the London Eye was not intended to be a permanent fixture. But I doubt it will come down anytime soon!
